FARMVILLE, Va. – A goal from Matt Tucker in the 56th minute led the George Mason men's soccer team to its third shutout of the season defeating Longwood, 1-0 in Farmville. Solid defense coupled with a strong attacking effort helped keep the clean sheet for the Patriots.
MATCH NOTES
-Longwood attacked early, attempting several shots in the first 25 minutes including a header by Vaughn Fowler that went high and a shot from Dan Campos that hit the post in the 24th minute.
-Mason's defense came up strong in the 26th minute, blocking a shot attempt from Dan Campos.
-The Patriots got their first shot off in the 30th minute from Daniel Hoffmann that went high.
-Mason saw a solid scoring opportunity in the 44th minute as Jannik Eckenrode blasted a shot that nearly missed, hitting the post as the teams headed into intermission scoreless.
-Early in the second half, Mason rattled off three shots within a minute that ended with the game-winning goal.
-Henning Dirks looked to put the Patriots on the board with a shot that hit the crossbar at the 54:12 mark before Hoffmann's attempt at 55:07 was blocked.
-Mason broke through at the 55:10 mark as Matt Tucker received the rebound off Hoffmann's blocked shot and converted from the top right of the box for the go-ahead tally.
-Michael Butts came up with his first save of the evening in the 65th minute and made his second stop just four minutes later to keep the Lancers off the board.
-While Longwood continued to seek the equalizer, Mason worked hard to hold off the Lancers, including a save in the 86th minute as Mason captured the shutout.
