Boulder, Colo. – George Mason University's women's volleyball managed to came out of the psychological hole resulting from a heavy loss in the third set and was just a point away from forcing a fifth set against Omni Invitational co-host Colorado, but the Buffaloes saved the Patriots' set points and closed the match in four sets.
MATCH NOTES
-Senior outside hitter Morghan Martin again led Mason, finishing with 13 kills while the Patriots hit 0.092 as a team.
-Gabby Simpson had a match-high performance with 16 kills for the Buffaloes, contributing to .241 team hitting.
-Mason took two early leads in the first set on two attack errors by Simpson.
-Colorado responded with three unanswered points to grab a 4-2 lead and take control of the set.
-The Buffaloes took their first double-digit lead at 17-7 and from that moment the teams exchanged points for the final 25-15 in the set.
-After an identical beginning to the second set, Colorado was in pole position to win the set, taking its largest lead at 19-13 on a kill by Stephanie Shadley.
-The Patriots, however, had not said their final word, and after a timeout called by head coach Jackie Simpson, went on a 8-2 run to tie it up at 21.
-The Buffaloes seemed to regain their composure by pulling away 23-21, but resilient defense at the net and well-organized attacking plays by Mason on freshman setter Montana Green's sequence were at the heart of a 4-0 run that won the second set for the Patriots and brought them on level terms in the match.
-Martin had two kills, redshirt senior Lola Owokoniran added one and Colorado committed three errors for the Buffaloes resounding 25-6 win in the third set.
-The Patriots came back stronger in the fourth set and dominated the home team early on, reaching three eight-point leads, the last at 13-5.
-The Buffaloes starter creeping in with numerous mini-runs, until they finally tied the set at 19 with a service ace by Abbie D'Agosta and regained the lead on the following play.
-The remainder of the set featured numerous attack errors from both teams, two tied scores and two lead changes
-A kill by junior Tiffany Clarke gave Mason two set points at 24-22, but Colorado matched the Patriots' 4-0 run from the second set to close the set and match at 26-24.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-The Patriots registered 33 kills on 109 attacks in the match, while the Buffaloes put away 49 of their 112 attack attempts.
-Colorado finished the match with 45 digs, with 15 more than Mason.
-Green had two of Mason's four serve aces in the match, while Simpson registered five of the Buffaloes' 13 aces
