Boulder, Colo. – George Mason University's women's volleyball won its first set of the Omni Invitational to tie Weber State at one set a piece at the time, but the Wildcats won the following two sets to end their tournament appearance with a win.
MATCH NOTES
-Mason hit .087 as a team but senior Morghan Martin still managed to put in a traditional good performance and finished the match with 11 kills.
-Weber State's hitting percentage was .291 and the Wildcats' attack was led by Samantha Staker with 16 kills, followed by Amanda Varley and Ciera Borho with 12 kills each
-The Patriots had a better start to the first set and accumulated a 6-1 lead on freshman Maddie French and sophomore Sydney Fanoga's serving sequences.
-The Wildcats copied that run to tie the score at 7-7 but had to battle another three-point deficit before they could take their first lead at 14-13 on a serve ace by Jesse Hover.
-Mason trailed by three points late in the set, but a kill by Fanoga and a block by her and Martin brought the Patriots within one at 22-21.
-Weber State responded with a well-timed timeout and three unanswered points after it to close the first set at 25-21.
-The teams exchanged points in the beginning of the second set, but Mason was the first to pull away by three at 6-3 on freshman Montana Green's serving sequence.
-The Patriots used the run to build momentum and their lead reached four on two occasions at 16-12 and 19-15, with the Wildcats rarely managing to get within two points.
-A late momentum switch, however, allowed Weber State to come within one in the closing stage of the set, but Mason never gave in under the pressure and closed the set at 25-22 with a block by junior Tiffany Clarke and redshirt senior Lola Owokoniran.
-Mason started the third set in the best possible way – with a serve ace by French – which started a 6-4 run for the Patriots at the beginning of the set.
-The Wildcats, however, responded with a 5-0 run – the best for either team in the entire match – to set the tempo for the remainder of the set.
-They later repeated that run to reach its highest lead at 23-11 before closing at 25-14.
-Mason picked up its only lead of the fourth set via service error by Hover for 1-0.
-Weber State responded with a 6-1 run to pick up a four-point lead, which the Patriots later halved with a kill by junior Jessie Greenslade at 8-6.
-This was as close as Mason got to their opponent in the set and with the help of several more runs Weber State closed the set and match at 25-16.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Mason and Weber State both made 127 attack attempts in the match, from which the Patriots registered 40 kills as opposed to the Wildcats' 54.
-The Wildcats had a less resounding advantage in digging, 53-49, and serve aces, 6-5. –Both teams registered only one solo block each, but the Wildcats had 20 block assists while Mason had only 10.
