FAIRFAX, Va. – After nearly 109 scoreless minutes, Henning Dirks was able to put in the golden goal to give the George Mason men's soccer team a 1-0, double overtime victory over High Point on Saturday evening at George Mason Stadium.
MATCH NOTES
-Dirks' goal was his second of the season and his first game winner of the 2015 campaign. Moving up from midfield Jannik Eckenrode dished the ball to Dirks who took it from 30 yards out, beat two defenders and finished through goalkeeper Kody Palmer inside the box.
-Dirks and Matt Tucker each had headers that were sent wide in a scoreless first half in which both teams had seven shots. It was a back and forward affair from both sides for the entirety of the match.
-Zach Herstek nearly gave Mason the lead in the 70th minute. Taylor Washington delivered an on-target cross to Herstek in the the middle of the field where he headed the ball off the bottom corner of the left post.
-The biggest save of the match came in the 87th minute of play. High Point drew a foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick attempt from Renato Punyed that was saved by a diving Stephen Kraus to keep the game scoreless.
-The match saw a total of four yellow cards and two red cards, including one on Kraus in the 89th minute. Michael Butts stepped in goal and played the remainder of regulation and the two overtime periods.
-The victory was head coach Greg Andrulis' 100th at George Mason.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Overall there was a total of 36 shots in the contest; High Point recorded 20 to Mason's 16. The Patriots outshot the Panthers 5-4 in the two overtime periods.
-Kraus made five saves for Mason while in goal. Butts recorded one in his second victory of the year.
-Punyed led the match with eight shots, three on goal and one penalty kick that was saved, his first attempt of the season. Dirks' had a game-high five for the Patriots, including the game winner.
-High Point landed six shots on goal compared to Mason's four.
