Air Force Academy, Colo. – George Mason University's women's volleyball team fought hard to take at least one set from co-host Air Force Academy, but ultimately dropped their Omni Invitational opener in straight sets.
MATCH NOTES
-Mason hit .337 on the night, led by redshirt senior Lola Owokoniran and freshman Maddie French with eight kills each.
-The Falcons were again led by senior Akokwe Clement, who had 15 kills; Shelley Spires also finished in double digits with 10.
-The Patriots' highest lead in the match was two points, which came after the opening two plays of the match
-Mason fought back from an early four-point deficit to tie it at 14 in the opening set, but could not find a response to another run by the Falcons, which saw them take a 22-18 lead before closing the first set 25-22.
-Mason came within one on a service error by Clement at 5-4 in the second set, but the Falcons went on a 10-3 run to gain a comfortable advantage.
-The home team's advantage reached double digits at 24-14 in the second set and they went on to win the set on the next play with a kill by Spires.
-The Falcons carried their momentum to start the third set on a 6-1 run.
-The lead reached its high point at 18-10, forcing Mason's head coach Jackie Simpson to call her final timeout.
-The Patriots put on a fight and came within two at 23-21 by scoring five unanswered points on Cobanovic's serve, but kills by Spires and Clement put their run to an end to close out the set and match in favor of the Falcons, 25-21.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Mason registered 30 kills on 82 total attempts in the match, compared to the Air Force Academy's 42 kills on 77 attacks.
-The Falcons had a slight advantage over the Patriots in digging, 29-22.
