NORFOLK, Va. – Playing its final non-conference game of the 2015 season, the George Mason women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback at former conference foe Old Dominion Friday night. The Patriots sliced their deficit in half with an Emma Starr goal in the second half, but the Lady Monarchs cushioned their lead with a goal in the 86th minute for the final 3-1 score.
MATCH NOTES
-All four goals were scored in the second half after the teams played a scoreless first 45 minutes.
-Seven shots were taken in the first period with five placed on goal, but none were converted.
-ODU's Iris Achterhof recorded a hat trick in the contest, scoring all three goals for the Lady Monarchs.
-Achterhof opened the scoring with her first tally of the evening in the 53rd minute of play. Kira Laurento played the through ball to Achterhof who completed the goal.
-ODU took a 2-0 lead less than four minutes later as the duo paired again for the second goal of the evening. Laurento setup Achterhof for her fifth goal of the season and second of the night.
-Shortly after ODU's second goal, Mason created a deep threat with a blasted shot that hit the crossbar, but couldn't find the back of the net in the 61st minute.
-Mason got on the scoreboard with Emma Starr's second goal of the season. From 25-yards out, Starr blasted a shot to the far post, hitting the post and finding the back of the net. Alex Myers assisted on the play in the 79th minute.
-Achterhof struck again in the 86th minute for a hat trick on the evening. This time, Devyn Hannis setup the goal from the left side.
