FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team (2-4-0) answered No. 17 Hofstra in the 79th minute, however the Pride struck back six minutes later to earn the 2-1 victory over the Patriots on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
MATCH NOTES
-It was a scoreless first half for the second time this season. The Patriots also lost the other scoreless first half match this season 2-0 to Albany.
-Each keeper recorded a save in the first period. Michael Butts made his second consecutive start in net for the Patriots.
-Hofstra struck first in the second half in the 54th minute. Butts made an initial save on Joseph Holland who's shot came inside the box and rebound to the right where Meshack Eshun Addy finished into the right of the goal for his third of the season and the 1-0 lead.
-The Patriots answered 25 minutes later in the 79th minute. For the second time this season Brice Colcombe and Cullen Hunter combined for a throw in/header combination with Hunter finishing right in fron of the net to even the game at 1-1. It was his second goal of the season.
-The Pride retook the lead nearly six minutes later in the 85th minute on a perfect right-to-left pass by Eshun Addy across the front of the goal that was finished in the top let corner by Marius Flateboe for the 2-1 lead.
-Trailing 2-1, Hunter sent a header just over the crossbar in the 88th minute and Henning Dirks sent one high as well in the final minute as Mason came up short in the 2-1 loss.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Hofstra outshot the Patriots 15-10 in the contest, 8-3 in the first half.
-Butts made three more saves in the second half for a total of four and also allowed his first two goals of the season.
-Holland recorded a team-high six shots for the Pride. Dirks took four for the Patriots
-Mason is now 0-2 against ranked opponents this season.
