FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason scored twice within the first 34 minutes propelling the Patriots past the visiting Illinois State Redbirds, 2-0. Alex Myers and Emma Starr each scored their first goals of the season in the Mason victory. The Patriots kept a clean slate behind solid defense and four saves from goalkeeper Kirsten Glad.
MATCH NOTES
-After 7:19 seconds of scoreless play, Mason opened the scoring with a blast from Alex Myers. Kelsey Young delivered a long service to Myers who beat out the goalkeeper trying to intercept the cross and found the upper right left corner of the net for a 1-0 Mason lead in the 8th minute.
-Emma Starr cushioned Mason's lead with a tally in the 34th minute. Inside the box, Sarah Hardison passed it out to Starr who blasted a shot from just outside the box into the top corner of the net.
-The Redbirds saw only one shot on goal in the first half, coming in the 21st minute as Mason led 2-0 at halftime.
-ISU forced Glad into three saves in the second half, the first coming in the 66th minute.
-Both teams played an even second half, attempting six shots apiece as ISU tried to convert, forcing Glad into three saves in the period.
-The win marked Mason's second consecutive victory and first over Illinois State in their inaugural meeting.
