NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the second consecutive week, the George Mason women's soccer team has picked up an Atlantic 10 Player of the Week accolade. For her performance at UMBC on Friday, sophomore Abby Downey was named the A-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday.
“Abby scoring the game-winner in overtime is only a small part of what she has done for us this season,” commented head coach Todd Bramble. “She is an extremely talented and steady central defender who is a very good distributor of the ball and is obviously a threat on set plays. This is just the beginning of her being on track to have a great year.”
After trailing 2-1 in the second period against the Retrievers, Mason scored the game-tying goal with two seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Downey scored the game-winner in the 106th minute heading in a Kaila Williams corner kick for Mason's 3-2 victory. With the win, Mason improved to 2-1 on the season.
Last week, junior Sarah Hardison earned the A-10's first player of the week award of the season after recording a hat trick at American.
Mason returns to action at home on Friday, September 4 hosting the Patriot Invitational. Mason opens the two-day tournament against UNCW at 5 p.m.
