WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Patriots swept Georgetown 3-0 in head coach Jackie Simpson's first game at the helm Friday night to open the 2015 campaign. The decision marks women's volleyball's first season-opening win since 2009.
COACH'S CORNER
“The win is super exciting because we were executing the game plan,” Simpson said. “We had a game plan going and we practiced it and they were really focused on all the little details of what they needed to do.”
MATCH NOTES
- The win marks Mason's first victory over the Hoyas since 2010, when the Patriots took a 3-0 sweep over Georgetown.
- Senior Lola Owokoniran led the Patriots with 13.5 points on the night behind nine kills, one solo block and seven block assists.
- The Patriots scored 15 points behind the serve of senior Morghan Martin, including six straight in the first set to give Mason a 9-4 lead.
- Martin finished the night with 12 points behind a career-high tying four aces and eight kills. Senior Lola Owokoniran led the Patriots with nine kills on the night along with eight blocks.
- Junior Caitlyn Hipsher led the team with 27 assists on the match
STAT BREAKDOWN
-The Patriots led the match with 10 blocks compared to Georgetown's two.
- Mason led the side-out battle, 54 percent to the Hoyas' 43 percent.
- Though the Patriots led the decisive third set from end-to-end, the match saw nine ties and six lead changes.
