GREENVILLE, N.C. – In the season opener for both teams Friday night, East Carolina women's soccer topped George Mason 2-0. The Pirates held onto a one-goal halftime advantage and cushioned their lead in the second half. Mason saw action from 17 different players in the contest.
MATCH NOTES:
-ECU opened the scoring in the 21st minute behind the season's first goal from Kendall Frey. Lana Spitler assisted on the tally delivering a through pass from 30 yards out to Frey at the near corner of the goal. Frey completed the pass with the goal into the lower left corner of the net.
-Emma Starr looked for the equalizer with a header shot in the 33rd minute, but goalkeeper Saundra Baron came up with the stop for the 1-0 halftime lead.
-With her first start in goal as a Patriot, Kirsten Glad picked up her fifth save of the game in the 65th minute.
-After nearly 60 minutes of scoreless action, ECU doubled its lead on Lana Spitler's first goal of the season in the 80th minute.
-Mason attacked late as Abby Downey tried to complete a corner kick by Sydney Mitchell, but Baron was in position to collect the save for the final 2-0 score.
POST-GAME QUOTES:
-“We certainly are disappointed in tonight. Although ECU is a good team and we have a lot of respect for them, I don't think they are two goals better than us. A little bit of something was missing tonight. We weren't as sharp as we have been all preseason or in our two exhibition games. It is a disappointing feeling leaving Greenville tonight.” – Head Coach Todd Bramble
-“It was good for Sydney Mitchell to get in the game tonight; we sat her out both preseason games. Kirsten Glad in goal made a couple good saves early in the game for us. We used 17 players in the game tonight and we are committed to developing our depth for the season. Tonight, we rotated players in and out as players continue to establish their positions. Overall, it wasn't a better performance from our team tonight.” – Head Coach Todd Bramble
STAT BREAKDOWN:
-East Carolina led Mason in shots, 13-6, and shots on goal, 7-4.
-Kirsten Glad collected five saves in her first start of the season. ECU's Saundra Baron held Mason scoreless with four saves.
-Mason led ECU in corner kicks, 5-4.
NEXT ON THE PITCH:
-Mason returns to action on Sunday making the short trip to American. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
