The George Mason women's soccer team kicks off the 2015 season Friday night at East Carolina. The Patriots and Pirates take the pitch at 7 p.m. in the season opener for both teams.
Mason wrapped up preseason play with a pair of home exhibition contests against Radford and James Madison. Mason's leading returning scorer, Erin Mitchell, was second on the team last season in goals, posting three. Senior Sydney Mitchell led the Patriots with a team-best five assists on the year. A trio of newcomers will compete for time in goal as Mason welcomed Kirsten Glad, Keri Sachtleben and Morgan Symmers to the squad.
A veteran ECU squad, guided by 17th-year head coach Rob Donnenwirth, boasts 19 returners and 10 newcomers following its inaugural season as a member of the American Athletic Conference in 2014. The Pirates produced an overall mark of 12-8-1 last season and return leading scorers Kendall Frey and Lana Spitler, who tied for leading scorer behind eight goals and 18 points.
The two teams met last season in Fairfax with ECU taking the decision, 2-0. Mason leads the all-time series, 7-2, last defeating the Pirates on October 29, 2000 at home.
