HARRISONBURG, Va. – The George Mason baseball team scored 13 runs on 11 hits, however James Madison put up 15 runs on only nine hits as the Dukes defeated the Patriots 15-13 on Tuesday night.

The Patriots (16-21-1) scored at least two runs in five separate innings while JMU scored at least three in three separate innings, including nine runs in the bottom of the fifth on only two hits. Taylor Hunt suffered his second loss of the year after allowing the game-winning three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Brett Johnson.

Mason got out to a 7-0 lead after the first two and a half innings. Three runs scored with two outs in the top of the first, two coming off a single by Tyler Nelin into right field. Two more runs came across in the second on a Michael Smith single and Brandon Gum's sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead after two. Another pair scored in the top of the third when Luke Willis chopped a ball up the middle to bring home Brady Acker and Trevor Kelly.

After James Madison scored three runs off of starting pitcher Ryan Ricci in the bottom of the third Mason put each run back on the board in the top of the fifth. Acker led off with a walk and was brought home in the next at bat by Kelly's double down the left field line. Smith singled home Kelly and Gum brought home Smith on a single for the 10-3 lead.

JMU grabbed the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fifth, scoring nine runs in the frame. The Dukes drew five walks, had two hit batters and also scored on a wild pitch along with a three-run triple from Johnson, who ended the game with eight RBI.

Trailing 12-10 after the fifth, Kelly gave Mason the lead back with his first career homerun, a bomb over the left field wall that scored Acker and Tyler Nelin in the top of the sixth for the temporary 13-12 advantage. James Madison would regain the lead however in the bottom of the seventh on Johnson's three run blast and the final 15-13 score.

The Patriots used seven total pitchers while James Madison used five in the three hour and thirty four minute ballgame. Willis and Smith each extended their hit streaks to 16 games, each with a single. Five Patriots had at least two RBI, led by Kelly's four.

Mason hosts crosstown rival George Washington this weekend, beginning on Friday at 3:00 p.m.in the continuation of the Revolutionary Rivalry.
