Men's Volleyball Hosts St. Francis (Pa.) and Penn State This Weekend

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team is set to host St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday and #7 Penn State on Saturday this weekend.  The Patriots split this past weekend with a win against Sacred Heart before falling to Harvard.

The Patriots split the series last season, winning in five sets in the second match to help earn the final EIVA Tournament spot.  However, the Red Flash took the first game against Mason in four sets earlier this season.  St. Francis (Pa.) comes into this match on a three-match losing streak, including losses to EIVA opponents, Princeton and NJIT.

The Patriots hold a 29-10 all-time record against the Red Flash.  Stephen Braswell leads Saint Francis (Pa.) this season on offense with 168 kills.  Daniel Ford has provided a team-best 468 assists on the year.  Meanwhile, Mike Marshman has an impressive 52 total blocks to lead the Red Flash defense.

The Nittany Lions come into this match on an eighth-match winning streak, including five sweeps.  The Nittany Lions hold a 99-14 all-time series record against the Patriots, including one Penn State win earlier this season.

The Patriots fell to eventual EIVA Champions Penn State all three times last season, including a conference semifinals matchup that went four sets.  Aaron Russell leads the Penn State offense with 364 kills this season and ranks second in the NCAA with 4.73 kills per set.  Taylor Hammond has provided the bulk of assists with 830 so far this season.  Meanwhile, Connor Curry leads the defense with 186 digs.

George Mason Notes

Freshman Brian Negron has played a big part on offense for the Patriots, pacing the team with 597 assists.  Negron is fifth in the EIVA and 17th nationally with an average of 9.48 assists per set.  Jack Wilson and Radoslav Popov have been impressive on offense as well for Mason, ranking 11th (2.69) and 12th (2.68) in the conference in kills per set, respectively.  Christian Malias is now ranked fifth in the EIVA with 1.93 digs per set after finishing both matches last weekend with double-digit digs.

Paco Velez has been impressive on offense and defense for the Patriots this season.  Along with being named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week (March 2), Velez has also earned EIVA Offensive Player of the Week (March 2) and Defensive Player of the Week (February 9) honors earlier this season.  Velez leads the team in kills (181), digs (118), and aces (38).  Velez ranks third nationally with 0.60 aces per set so far this season.
