FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason shot just 24.1 percent in the second half as the men's basketball team dropped a 67-51 decision to local rival George Washington on Wednesday. With the win, GW gained a 7-5 lead in the annual Revolutionary Rivalry between the two schools.
The Patriots hit just seven field goals in the second half and were shooting 17% through 12 minutes of play allowing GW to gain a double-digit lead and take the win. GW out-rebounded Mason in the second half, 21-14, and shot 47.8 percent from the field. The Patriots cut the score to seven points with less than five minutes to play, but Mason could not cut the deficit further.
Mason led at the halftime break, 32-29, shooting 40.0 percent from the field in the stanza, but came out of the gate sluggish in the second half to finish the game shooting 32.2 percent. Marquise Moore led Mason with 12 points, while senior Vaughn Gray added 10 points. Shevon Thompson led Mason with nine rebounds as GW took the battle on the glass, 38-29.
Patricio Garino led GW with 15 points, while Kevin Larsen and Paul Jorgensen each contributed 11 points. Garino just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, leading the Colonials on the boards. GW also used a strong performance from the free throw line to cap off the win, finishing 18-of-21 at the charity stripe.
The Patriots led by as many as six in the first half, but was outscored in the paint, 30-18. Mason pulled down 17 rebounds, converting the boards into 19 second chance points and committed just nine turnovers in the contest while forcing the Colonials into 13.
Mason closes out the regular season at in-state foe VCU on Saturday. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. on NBC Sports Network.
