The Patriots scored four goals in the final 12 minutes of action but it wasn't enough as George Mason lacrosse (6-4, 1-1 A-10) fell 17-7 at the University of Massachusetts (9-1, 2-0 A-10) Sunday afternoon.
The Minutewomen score eight goals over 18 minute before Caitlin McGinn found the back of the net for Mason to bring the Patriots within 8-1 with 7:10 to play in the first half. UMass' Hanna Murphy responded with two goals in two minutes but Melissa Lobaccaro would convert a free position shot to send Mason into the break, down 10-2.
UMass started the second half with a six-minute, four goal rally and lead by as much as 16-3 with 13:20 remaining before the Patriots would go on a 4-1 rally. Mackenzie Jones started things off for the Patriots with an assist from Melanie Williams. Lobaccaro would follow shortly after with her third goal of the afternoon. UMass' Maeve Cowley would break up the streak, but Kate Tangeman and Jordan Sdanowich would convert a goal each for the Patriots to bring the final score to 17-7.
Lobaccarro led Mason with three goals followed by Mackenzie Jones with a goal and an assist on the day. The Patriots return home Friday April 3, when they host La Salle at 3 p.m.
