Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing at Mary Washington Fall Classic

Tennis Finishes Springfest with Victory

The Mason women's tennis team, playing their final match of Springfest in Hilton Head, defeated Michigan Tech by a score of 6-1 today.

After the Huskies were forced to default two matches because of injuries the Patriots won the third point by taking the doubles matches.

Junior captain Brittany Pilkington, in her first singles match in over a month, won the clinching point by defeating Emiliia Tenizbaeva of Tech 7-5, 6-2. Esu Erdenebat, Mina Saygi and Jane Awad were all pushed to third set tie-breakers by their opponents. Erdenebat took early control in her breaker earn the win. Saygi fell behind 1-6 and then 4-9 before rallying back to win 15-13 in her tie-breaker to make the score 6-0 for Mason. Michigan Tech got their lone point when Freshman Jane Awad, playing at #1, lost to Sandra Cvetanovic 5-7, 6-2, 10-3.

"This was an important trip for us to get ready for our outdoor conference matches," commented Coach Stephen Curtis. "We got some valuable match play as well as practice in while here in Hilton Head."

Mason improves to 9-6 on the season as they conclude their Springfest trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Patriots will play their first home match of the season as they host the Richmond Spiders on March 20th at 3:15 p.m.
