The Mason women's tennis team split their two matches at the Hilton Head Spring Break Classic held on Hilton Head island. The Patriots defeated Savanah State, 5-1 before dropping a match 7-0 to South Carolina State.
Against Savanah State the Green and Gold won four of the five singles matches played and earned the doubles point with an 8-0 win at No. 2 as the Patriots team of Brittany Pilkington and Mina Saygi defeated Savanah State's duo, Vivas/Burrows.
Three of the singles points were earned with dominate play by Mason. At No. 3 Marijke Boers defeated Jennyfer Vivas, 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 Esu Erdenebat defeated Tiffany Williams, 6-0, 6-1 and at No. 5 Olivia Lacy-Thompson defeated Bria Burrow, 6-0, 6-1.
"After three days outside I am happy to say we are finally starting to get our timing," said coach Curtis. "This spring has been a challenge between the miserable weather and having Pilkington out, but I think things are beginning to come together."
Against South Carolina, the Patriots went to three sets in two singles matches. Mason's Morgan Yang lost the first set 7-6, but her opponent Oleksandra Fillippova at No. 1 singles took the second match, 6-2 and the tiebreaker 11-9. At No. 3 singles Boers won the second set 7-6 after losing the opening set, but lost the tiebreaker 11-9 as well.
The Patiots will play Ashford next on Wednesday.
