The Mason women's tennis team had a strong the first day of the Mary Washington Quad by going 2-0 on Saturday.
The Patriots started the day by defeating North Carolina Wesleyan by a score of 9-0. All but one of the Mason players defeated their Fighting Bishop opponents in straight set victories.
After a short break the Patriots were back on the court to take on the undefeated Lancers from Longwood. The Patriots swept the doubles to go up 1-0. Marijke Boers, Morgan Yang and Esu Erdenebat secured the victory with singles wins.
"Longwood is a solid, well coached team and we played well," commented Head Coach Stephen Curtis. "This match could have gone either way but we fought hard."
Mason was back on court early Sunday to take on the host, 22 ranked DIII team in the country, Mary Washington.
The Eagles took two of the three doubles to take a 2-1 lead. Mason mounted a come back as Jane Awad and Marijke Boers secured wins at #1 and #2. The rest of the line-up for Patriots could not overcome their Eagle opponents.
"I think we came out a little flat after our late night victory over Longwood," stated Curtis. "The Eagles came out gunning for us and they were more intense and fought harder than we did. I hope our young team can learn from this experience."
Mason moves to 6-3 on the year. They will host Towson next Saturday at 4:45pm. The match will be played at the Springfield Golf & Country Club, 8301 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield VA.
