Kristi Mokube registered her fourth career double-double and Taylor Brown narrowly missed one of her own as George Mason women's basketball (12-12, 4-7 A-10) fell 85-79 in overtime at UMass (9-14, 3-8 A-10) Wednesday afternoon.
Brown led all scorers with 30 points on the day and a season-high nine assists. The redshirt junior tied her career-high with five threes including a trey with26 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, the Minutewomen would go on to outscore the Patriots 13-7 in extra time, including going 9-14 from the line. On the game, UMass was 61.4 percent (21-34) from the charity stripe compared to the Patriots 81.0 percent (17-21).
After shooting 22.2 percent (2-9) over the first five minutes of play, the Patriots would heat up following a jumper from senior Rachel McNair to shoot 45.2 percent (14-31) from the field including 6-14 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play. Mason led by as much as 12 points with 3:54 in the half, but UMass would finish the half on a 9-4 run to narrow the gap to seven points and trail the Patriots 36-29 at the break.
Mason stretched its lead to nine points, 51-42 with 14:51 to play, but UMass responded with a 22-8 run to pull in front 64-59. The Patriots would battle back, using a 13-8 run in the final 6:38 of regulation capped off by Brown's three to force overtime. The Patriots hit just one field goal in overtime, but kept things close hitting 83.3 (5-6) percent from the line.
UMass had four players hit double-digits led by Kim Pierre-Louis with 29. Mokube was the only other Patriot to score more than 10 points with 12 points and grab a team-high 12 rebounds before fouling out early in overtime. Senior Rachel McNair had a career-high 10 rebounds and classmate Talisha Watts added six rebounds and eight points in the effort.
The Green and Gold look to bounce back Saturday when the Patriots host VCU as part of George Mason's Homecoming week. The men's team will follow taking on Richmond at 4 p.m.
