The George Mason University wrestling team battled all day at the Lock Haven Classic Tournament and had several solid performances. Redshirt senior captain Vince Rodriguez(133) and redshirt junior Patrick Davis(165) both earned third place finishes for the Patriots in their respective weight divisions.
The Patriots as a team finished in seventh place and also had encouraging performances by redshirt sophomore Ibrahim Bunduka(125), redshirt freshman Tejon Anthony(141) and redshirt freshman Matt Voss(HWT).
Bunduka defeated Lock Haven's Jake Field by decision 3-2, before losing by fall to Pittsburgh's Jake Gromacki in the consolation finals.
Rodriguez wrestled tough throughout the day before losing in the semi-finals to the eventual winner of the 133 pound bracket Dom Forys of Pittsburgh by decision, 8-3. After advancing to the consolation finals, Rodriguez won third place after a medical forfeit by Binghamton. This is Rodriguez' second top three finish this season; in November the California native finished in second place in the Navy Classic.
At 141 pounds, Anthony continued his strong run of form by finishing in fourth place. Anthony advanced to the semi-finals before being defeated by decision 3-1. The Patriot wrestler then lost in the consolation championship, 4-3. Anthony is slowly but surely becoming a reliable source of points for the Patriots as their season continues along.
Davis fought through the consolation bracket after losing in the quarterfinals to Cody Corles of Lock Haven by decision, 6-0. Davis won all four consolation matches by decision and actually defeated Corles by decision, 7-5, to avenge the earlier loss and to lock up third place.
Voss also performed strongly in the consolation bracket after losing in the quarterfinals. However unlike Davis, Voss' jouney ended in the finals of the consolation bracket, where he lost by decision, 6-4 to Kent State's Devin Nye. Although Voss did not earn third place, the redshirt freshman continues to grow each match.
The more matches Voss is able accrue before conference duals start will only make him more dangerous for opponents that face him. The emergence of Anthony, Davis and Voss will take the pressure off of Rodriguez and redshirt captain senior Greg Flournoy when it comes to earning points at future tournaments or duals.
In other Mason wrestling news, Flournoy has advanced to day two of the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships after going 4-1 in today's competition. The bracket is attached but Flournoy will face Bryce Steiret of Northern Iowa in his first match of tomorrow's competition, in the consolation quarter-finals.
The entire Mason squad will feature Jan. 3 for a home dual against Virginia Tech, which will take place in the RAC gym.
