Dayton, Ohio. – George Mason University's women's volleyball could not match Dayton's class and lost the Sunday afternoon match against the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season champion in three sets.
MATCH NOTES
-Senior outside hitter Morghan Martin led Mason with nine kills in attack, while also registering team-best .250 hitting percentage.
-Martin also had significant contribution in the Patrots' defensive efforts and finished was one of the two players who finished with 12 digs along with senior libero Jelena Cobanovic.
-Senior Alaina Turner and sophomore Amber Erhahon led the Flyers in attack with 15 and 12 kills, respectively; senior libero expectedly stood out in defense with match-high 17 digs.
-Building on its strong 7-1 start, Dayton's lead reached double digits at 18-8 before the Flyers closed the first set on their highest lead at 25-11 on a kill by Turner.
-Sophomore middle blocker Sydney Fanoga and senior middle blocker Meredith Bush gave Mason its first leads of the match at 2-1 and 3-2 in the second set, but Dayton quickly regained the lead.
-The last time the Patriots were within two points of their opponent was at the 8-6 mark, which was followed by an 11-5 run by the Flyers that gave them their largest lead of the set at 19-11.
-Both teams scored eight points each for the rest of the set, which went Dayton's way with a 25-17 scoreline.
-A service ace by junior setter Caitlyn Hipsher gave Mason its first of three two-point leads – the team's largest of the match – at 4-2. The last such lead was at 6-4, but Dayton responded with three unanswered ponts.
-The Patriots' last lead of the match came from an attack error by Dayton at 8-7.
-Little by little, the Flyers pulled away with mini runs and their lead reached six on several occasions before they completed the sweep by winning the third and final set namely by this margin, 25-19.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Mason recorded 29 kills while hitting .105 as a team against Dayton, while the Flyers had 43 kills with a hitting percentage of .317.
-Hipsher had the only solo block by either team in the match, but Dayton still won the blocking battle 9-4.
-Despite the match featuring only three sets, the long rallies gave opportunity for many digs by both teams, a stat that favored the Flyers by a narrow margin, 47-44.
