FAIRFAX, Va. – Henning Dirks scored two goals within two and a half minutes to send the George Mason men's soccer team past Rhode Island 2-1 on Senior Night and the final regular season contest of 2015. URI came into the contest standing in fourth-place in the league. Mason finishes the season with an overall record of 7-7-3 after closing out the season with three straight victories.
MATCH NOTES
-URI threatened early in the 14th minute when Dominik Richter took a shot from the far side seeking the left corner, but Steffen Kraus was in position for the save.
-Rhode Island grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when Nick Ferguson finished a Ryan Oakley service. Ferguson was at the far post and was able to gain possession, heading in Oakley's serve into the back left corner for the 1-0 lead.
-Mason looked for the equalizer late in the first half when Ryan Harmouche received a Henning Dirks cross. Harmouche was in the middle of the box and blasted a shot right to Nils Leifhelm who came up with the save.
-Henning Dirks quickly erased URI's 1-0 halftime lead, netting his first goal in the 49th minute. Dirks converted a shot from the far post into the near back corner, tying the score at 1-1.
-The Patriot scored again just over two minutes later when Daniel Hoffmann carrying the ball down the line, found Dirks and off a rebound, slipped it past the goalkeeper for a 2-1 Mason lead.
-Dirks looked to cushion Mason's lead in the 60th minute when Matt Tucker passed it off as Nils Leifhelm stopped the shot to the lower left corner, keeping the score at 2-1.
-URI saw a solid scoring chance in the 81st minute when Dominik Richter blasted a shot at the far post. Kraus made a diving save to his right to punch it away.
-The Rams saw its final chance in the 89th minute. Dante Lamb headed an attempt that was just off the mark as Mason took the decision 2-1.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Rhode Island outshot the Patriots 10-7 in the contest despite Mason holding the 4-3 shots on goal advantage.
-Henning Dirks led Mason with four shots in the contest, putting three on goal.
