Radford, Va. - George Mason University's women's basketball team opened their 2015-16 on the road with a 66-63 overtime lost to in-state Radford at the Dedmon Center.
GAME NOTES
-Eleven Patriots saw court time in the game, six of them making their first appearance for Mason – freshmen Chinyere Bella and Jewel Triggs and redshirt juniors Kara Wright, Bridget O'Donnell, Katrina Hutzell and Tiffany Padgett.
-The game was tied at 8-8 before Mason went on a 8-0 run to end the first quarter. Mason scored the first 3 points of the second quarter to extend the run to 11 straight points. Radford made of run of their own, 9-2 to end the quarter and go into the intermission tied at 29 points apiece.
-Mason was up two (57-55) with 1:45 left in regulation before Radford's Aisha Foy hit a trey to give the Highlanders a one-point lead at the :35 second mark. Mason's Padgett was fouled and made one of two free throws to tie the game. The game went to OT when Gaby Gilmore missed a jumper at the buzzer.
-The game was tied for the 11th time at 61-61 with just less than 2 minutes to go in OT when the Highlanders Aisha Foy hit a 3-pointer. Padgett trimmed the Radford lead to one point with a jumper at :21. After the Higlanders hit two FTs with :11 seconds, the Patriots had one last 3-point attempt that fell short at the buzzer.
-Redshirt senior and the team's leading scorer last season Taylor Brown led Mason's offense with 17 points, while senior Kristi Mokube finished in double digits with 12 points and 8 rebounds.
-Redshirt Junior Tiffany Padgett was the Patriots dominant force in the paint, finishing with team-high 11 rebounds, four offensive, and added six points.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-The two teams played relatively close to even in all categories; Mason made 22-of-58 FGs, Radford 21-60; Highlanders edged out Patriots 43-41 on the boards.
-The Highlanders (20-32 FTs) visited the free throw line four more times then the Patriots (17-28 FTs) but both were low 60% for the game.
-Turnovers were close to even with Radford commiting 17 to Mason's 16, but the Patriots stole the ball nine times to Radford's seven.
-Radford outscored Mason 8-5 in OT
