Fairfax, Va. – George Mason University's women's volleyball team could not keep up with the tempo of one of the Atlantic 10 Conference leaders Dayton and dropped their first home conference match for the season in straight sets at the RAC on Friday night.
MATCH NOTES
-Senior Morghan Martin finished with eight kills for Mason, while sophomore Sydney Fanoga finished with six kills with team-best .333 hitting percentage.
-Sophomore Jordan Glass had five digs for the Patriots.
-Dayton's senior Alaina Turner again played a crucial role in the Flyers' win, finishing with match-high 13 kills.
-The Flyers' senior libero Janna Krafka was the only player who finished the match with double digits in digs with 11.
-Dayton began the match with a serious 6-0 run on Krafka's serving sequence in the first set.
-Mason capitalized on a series of errors by the visiting team to half the deficit at 9-6, but the Flyers won six of the following eight points to pull ahead by seven at 15-8 and force a Mason timeout.
-The Flyers continued to dominate the set and their lead reached 12 at 23-11 before Mason went on a mini-run for the final 25-15.
-The beginning of the second set was much more contested and although the Flyers managed to pull away by three, the Patriots tied the score at 15 with an ace by freshman Erica Partridge.
-The team continued the even pace until 21-21, but a pair of controversial calls in the closing stage went the Flyers' way and helped them win four consecutive points to win the set 25-21.
-After the intermission, the Patriots grabbed the lead on two occasions in the third set – at 1-0 and 6-5 – but could not build momentum off them and Dayton pulled back both times.
-When the teams were all square at 10, Dayton went on a 10-2 run that put Mason out of the match and deservedly closed the set and match at 25-17 even though the Patriots managed to get within four at 21-17.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Dayton's dominance was reflected in the attacking statistics, with the Flyers registering 41 kills compared to Mason's 23.
-Redshirt senior Lola Owokoniran's two solo blocks were one more than Dayton's total for the match.
-The Flyers were much more convincing in the digging battle, 34-20.
POST-MATCH QUOTES
"Dayton is one of the best teams in our conference and they are undefeated in the conference right now for a reason. They are very skilled with the ball and very terminal with the ball. We can be terminal at times, but we are just not consistent enough yet." - Mason head coach Jackie Simpson
NEXT ON THE COURT
Mason will have less than 24 hours' worth of rest before they take the court again against the other undefeated team in the A-10, Saint Louis. First serve at the RAC is again at 7 p.m.
