George Mason University's women's volleyball team returns home after 14 consecutive games on the road and will welcome Dayton and Saint Louis on Friday and Saturday nights, respectively, in front of their own fans at the RAC.
Mason goes into the home doubleheader off a four-set, comeback win against VCU in Richmond, Va. last Sunday. After registering 11 kills against the Rams, sophomore outside hitter Jordan Glass became the team's third most effective attacker with 1.64 kills per set, following senior Morghan Martin (2.90 kills/set), who also leads the team with total kills – 180, and junior Tiffany Clarke (2.11 kills/set). Freshman libero Erica Partridge and senior libero Jelena Cobanovic continue to impress in defense with cat-like reflexes, discouraging VCU attackers with 14 and 12 digs, respectively, for the win. Their performances in the last match improved their season totals to 170 for Cobanovic and 155 for Partridge.
Dayton remained unbeaten in conference play after two wins at home last weekend – a sweep of Fordham on Friday and a five-set thriller against Rhode Island two days later. Those latest wins extended Dayton's winning streak to nine games, their last defeat dating back to Sept. 11. Senior outside hitter Alaina Turner is having an outstanding last season with the Flyers, making impact both in attack and defense. She leads the team with 258 kills (4.37 kills/set) and has 140 digs to her name, only behind the starting libero Janna Krafka, who has 232 digs. The Patriots will look for a first ever defeat against the Flyers in this week's Game of the Week after having lost the first four contests between the two teams.
Mason will continue its tough weekend the following night when it hosts another unbeaten A-10 team, Saint Louis, which comes to the RAC with the confidence of a conference leader and of a team on an 11-game winning streak. The Billikens recorded results identical to those of Dayton against Fordham and Rhode Island and also have not previously tasted defeat in the hands of the Patriots, leading the all-time series 3-0. Saint Louis' attack is led by junior Danielle Rygelski, who has tallied 254 kills thus far this season. Rygelski also contributes to the Billikens being one of the best blocking teams in the conference by featuring as one of three players who have recorded eight solo blocks. The other two are junior and senior middle blockers Taylor Paulson and Megan Gilbert, who also have 50 and 44 block assists, respectively, to their name.
