Fairfax, Va. – George Mason University's women's volleyball team gave George Washington a scare in the first two sets, but the Colonials survived both times and dominated the third set to complete the Revolutionary Rivalry sweep over Mason.
MATCH NOTES
-Senior Morghan Martin led Mason at both ends in the match, being the only Patriot to reach double digits in kills (10) and adding 14 digs; senior libero Jelena Cobanovic aided the defensive effort with 12 digs.
-Sophomore Aaliyah Davidson had match-high 11 kills while senior setter led the Colonials with 11 digs as well as having the majority of their assists – 28.
-Although they trailed 7-4 early in the first set, the Patriots went on a 5-0 run to pick up their first of three two-point leads of the set.
-Mason's last lead of the set was at 12-10 and was followed by a George Washington run that allowed them to build a comfortable 21-15 lead.
-It looked like the set is wrapped up, but with the tireless support from the Green Machine and their fans, the Patriots came within one at 24-23 and had two attack attempts to tie the score, both tamed by the stubborn defense by the Colonials, who closed the set at 25-23 through Davidson.
-Mason's head coach Jackie Simpson took an early timeout in the second set when her team was trailing 6-2.
-George Washington retained control of the tempo and earned their highest lead of the match up to that point at 18-11.
-The Patriots, however, went on another incredible sparked by Cobanovic and junior setter Caitlyn Hipsher's serving to win 11 of the following 15 points and tie the score in the closing stage of the set, 22-22.
-That is as close as Mason came, however, before the Colonials closed the set with three consecutive points.
-Mason never led after the intermission while the Colonials' lead grew to double digits at 18-8 shortly before they completed the Revolutionary Rivalry sweep with an even larger margin, 25-14.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Both teams struggled in attack, but George Washington did slightly better by recording 37 kills while hitting .125, compared to Mason's 27 kills on .063.
-Martin and senior middle blocker Meredith Bush recorded the only two solo blocks in the match, but the Colonials won the battle at the net 4-3 team blocks.
