FAIRFAX, Va. – After playing through 106 scoreless minutes Sunday afternoon, George Washington kept it's clean A-10 sheet intact with a goal at 106:31 to seal a 1-0 victory over George Mason. With the win, GW took a 3-0 lead in the Revolutionary Rivalry.
MATCH NOTES
-Mason looked for the early lead in the sixth minute when Sarah Hardison blasted a shot to the lower left corner, but GW goalkeeper Miranda Horn cleared it away, punching it to the left.
-Erin Mitchell tried to find a tally in the 17th minute, but Conway cleared it away to keep the Patriots off the board.
-GW's only shot on goal in the first half occurred in the 34th minute when Mackenzie Cowley struck a shot directly at Glad.
-The Colonials saw a solid opportunity to take the lead in the 69th minute, but the shot was just off the mark. Kristi Abbate found Nicole Belfonti at the left post as Belfonti tried to push it past Glad, but the shot hit the post and was ruled a save.
-Mason setup a solid play in the 79th minute, looking to break open the scoring. Abby Downey delivered a perfect serve down the near line, finding Jenna Hamilton in front of the GW bench who served it to Erin Mitchell in the box. Conway made a perfect save to keep the score 0-0.
-GW saw a pair of scoring chances in the first overtime period, but Kirsten Glad was in position to make the saves.
-The first opportunity came in the 96th minute as Glad jumped high to knock away Cowley's blast above the goal. GW threatened again at the 99:50 mark when Abbate's shot hit the top of the goal.
-The Colonials broke through with a tally from Cowley in the 107th minute. In the middle, Lina Proska passed it off to Cowley, who slipped it to the left of Glad for the game-winning goal.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Mason outshot GW 16-8 including an 8-5 shots on goal advantage. The Patriots forced Ellen Conway into seven saves on the afternoon.
-Kirsten Glad made four stops in the contest, keeping the Colonials off the board for 106 minutes.
