FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason saw several opportunities in the final minutes to even the score, but couldn't put it away, dropping a tough 2-1 decision Thursday night against VCU. Mason next welcomes No. 1 George Washington on Sunday.
MATCH NOTES
-The teams stood tied at intermission each scoring a goal in the first half.
-Mason saw its first scoring opportunity in the 10th minute when Alex Myers delivered a perfect service to Nia Elbeck at the far post. Emma Kruse was able to make the stop.
-The Patriots broke through in the 34th minute on a tally from Sarah Hardison. Myers diverted a VCU defender, passing it off to Hardison who put it away in the right corner for a 1-0 Mason lead.
-VCU tied the score 1-1 in the 42nd minute. Julia Suarez completed a Megan Dell pass for a 1-1 tied match at halftime.
-The Rams took the lead in the 58th minute when awarded a free kick. Megan Dell slipped it to Sharon Wojcik who blasted it from 20-yards out above the hands of Kirsten Glad for a 2-1 advantage.
-Mason strongly attacked in the final minutes, seeking the equalizer.
-In the 79th minute, Niomi Serrano just missed the goal wide right.
-Less than two minutes later, the Patriots saw a solid chance when Serrano, on the near side, found Daniela Neves at the far post. Neves headed it straight to a diving Kruse to keep VCU in front.
-In the 86th minute, Erin Mitchell nearly had the game-tying shot from 25-yards out, but her attempt hit the right post and rolled out of bounds.
-Mason saw its final opportunity at 89:56 when Sarah Hardison blasted a shot into a crouching Kruse at the far post. On the rebound, Neves tried to regain control, but the clock ran out.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Overall shots were even at 13-13 as VCU placed six shots on goal to Mason's four.
-Kirsten Glad came up with four saves, while Emma Kruse recorded three.
-VCU narrowly led in corner kicks, 4-3.
-Nia Elbeck led Mason with four shots.
