Davidson, N.C. – George Mason University's women's volleyball team began a comeback after taking the third set against Davidson in a dramatic fashion, but the Wildcats halted the Patriots' efforts by dominating the final fourth set in front of their home fans.
MATCH NOTES
-Senior Morghan Martin led Mason with 16 kills with a .295 hitting percentage.
-Freshman Mason Rooney led the Wildcats with 13 kills and also recorded team-high 25 assists in the match, while also sophomore Kelly Friers also finished in double digits with 11 kills.
-Davidson's senior Morgan Shannon registered match-high 22 digs, twice as many as Mason's leading player in that compartment, senior Jelena Cobanovic.
-The Patriots took the first four leads in the match thanks to three successful attacks and an attack error by Davidson, but the Wildcats managed to draw even on the following plays.
-The home team went on a run first and turned a 5-6 deficit into a 9-6 lead with four unanswered points.
-Mason managed to come back within one at 13-12 and 14-13 on kills by redshirt senior Lola Owokoniran and sophomore Sydney Fanoga, respectively.
-The Wildcats responded with a 8-0 run to grab a nine-point in the closing stage of the first set, which they won 25-18.
-Davidson started the second set in a dominant manner and scored the first seven points on sophomore Kylie Bishopp's serving sequence.
-The home team's lead reached double digits at 13-3 and outscored Mason 12-5 for the remainder of the set.
-After the 10-minute break, Mason trailed 4-2 at the beginning of the third set, but consecutive five kills from three different players – Martin, junior Tiffany Clarke and freshman Maddie French – sparked the Patriots' best run in the match to give them a three-point lead.
-Four more unanswered points by Mason soon after gave them their highest lead of the match at 11-5.
-A Fanoga kill for 21-19 denied Davidson's first opportunity to come back on level terms, but the Wildcats succeeded to tie the score at 24-24 as a part of a 4-0 run.
-Coach Jackie Simpson's team retained its composure, however, and ultimately took the third set 26-24 after kills from Clarke and Owokoniran.
-Davidson followed up on an attack error committed at the very start of the fourth set with a 4-0 run to set the tempo for the remainder of the set.
-A serve ace by Martin brought the Patriots within one at 6-5, but was followed by five unanswered Wildcat points that made the score 11-5.
-Mason got within five on the next play with a kill by senior Meredith Bush, but that is as close as they got for the rest of the set, which the Wildcats won 25-12 with the help of a couple of additional runs.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-The Patriots hit .081 as a team and recorded 43 kills, while Davidson hit .331 and put away 51 attacks.
-The Wildcats won the digging battle 63-52.
-Mason had two solo blocks courtesy of Fanoga and Owokoniran and four block assists, while Davidson had five solo blocks and 20 block assists.

-Mason head back north for the second part of their weekend doubleheader, in which they visit in-state rival VCU on Sunday. First serve is at 1 p.m.
