FAIRFAX, Va. – A strong defensive performance from Dayton halted the George Mason men's soccer team Wednesday night as the Atlantic 10 Conference foes battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw. Matt Tucker knotted the game 1-1 with his third tally of the season in the 70th minute.
MATCH NOTES
-Shots were even in the first half as both teams attempted five.
-Michael Butts was forced into his first save of the evening early in the contest, making his first of three stops in the fourth minute.
-Dayton broke through in the 12th minute on a shuffled play in front of the goal. Dayton's Kissima Bojang found an opportunity to slip it past Mason's goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead that held for 60 minutes.
-Mason put its only shot on goal in the first half in the 44th minute from Edgar Zepeda.
-Matt Tucker scored the equalizer at the 69:38 mark. With Tucker carrying the ball, Ryan Harmouche's defense allowed Tucker to slip around a Dayton defender and blast a shot at Oliver Hansen. The attempt was too much to handle as Mason tied the game 1-1.
-Mason saw a solid opportunity for the game-winner in the first overtime. Henning Dirks carried the ball down the line, served it in to Gilian Buijk who passed it off to Daniel Hoffmann on the left post. Hoffman got a head on it, but the attempt was just left of the goal.
-Dayton recorded a shot on goal in the second overtime, but could not convert as Michael Butts came up with the save. Off a throw-in, Carlos Sendin sought the bottom left corner, but Butts made the save to keep the Flyers off the scoreboard.
