Taylor Brown hit her second buzzer beater in as many games to send the Patriots to overtime against St. Bonaventure Wednesday night. The George Mason women's basketball team (11-6, 3-1 A-10) would go on to outscore the Bonnies (11-6, 1-3 A-10) 15-2 in overtime on the way to a 68-55 win at home.
“You always have a chance with Tay on the floor,” head coach Nyla Milleson said of Brown, who would end the night with a game-high 25 points, eight rebounds, two steals and three assists.
Senior Sandra Ngoie added 16 with nine coming in overtime while Kristi Mokube added 12 points on 6-9 shooting in addition to eight rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.
“Sandy, obviously, played very well in the overtime. I thought Q Murray gave us a lot of energy down the stretch and did some great things,” Milleson said. “There were a lot of bright spots. I though Kube played well.”
The Patriots struggled offensively for the first 36 minutes of play, hitting just 28.8% from the field to find themselves down by as much as 10 points in the second half. Down 48-39 with just 3:32 in regulation, redshirt junior Kristi Mokube hit a put-back layup to spark a 14-5 run capped off by Brown's game-tying buzzer beater from beyond the arc.
“I just thought we went a stretch there in the second half where we weren't trusting each other or our offense,” Milleson said. “We were taking selfish shots and not handling things very well, but then we started to execute and knock some shots down. This actually might have been one of our best defensive games of the season. It just proves that you have to trust each other and play together.”
Brown and Ngoie continued the offensive clinic into overtime, going 3-6 from the field and a combined 8-8 from the free throw line to pull the game out of reach.
The Patriots return to action Sunday at Richmond at noon in a nationally televised game to be aired on ESPNU.
