The Mason women's tennis team began their season going undefeated in the 7th Annual Mason Women's Tennis Invitational. The tournament was an extended mock dual format of four doubles matches and eight singles matches.
The tournament opened with Mason playing Shepherd Saturday morning. The traditionally strong Division II team was no match for the Patriots who swept both singles and double for a 12-0 win. On Saturday afternoon Mason took on Mount St. Mary's. The Patriots won three of the four doubles matches and was leading in all but one of the singles matches when the match was called for weather as a thunderstorm rolled through.
The Patriots were back on the courts first thing Sunday morning as they played Christopher Newport. The Patriots were up 3-1 following doubles. Mason extended their lead taking five of the eight singles matches for a 8-4 final score.
Sunday afternoon the Patriots had their toughest battle against the other undefeated team, Howard. Mason was able to win all of the doubles except for the No. 1 position. The Bison started strong by taking early leads in all but one of the singles matches. The Patriots dug in to defend their home courts and rallied back to win five of the eight singles with one getting called for darkness to secure an 8-3 win.
"This was a good start to our fall season," commented Coach Stephen Curtis. "This was a chance to work out some nerves and see where we still need work. Overall I was pleased with our performance."
The Patriots travel to Mary Washington next weekend for the Mary Washington Fall Classic.
