NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Freshman Kaila Williams was honored for the first time by the Atlantic 10 Conference office on Tuesday, being tabbed the women's soccer Co-Rookie of the Week. Williams helped lead Mason to their first victory of the season on Sunday.

"Kaila is a dynamic team player on the field and truly a special addition to our squad," commented head coach Diane Drake. "I believe she will bring another level to our team this season and we are honored she gained this early honor."

Williams scored Mason's first goal of the season, which came against American as the Patriots took away a 2-1 victory over the Eagles. The Woodbridge, Va., native finished a Sydney Mitchell feed into the back corner of the net to put the Patriots up 1-0 in just the seventh minute. The goal not only marked Mason's first goal of the season, but it also marked the rookie's first collegiate career goal. Liz Agiato would cushion Mason's lead later in the half with an unassisted tally for a 2-0 advantage before American broke through late in the game for a 2-1 score.

Williams was joined by Danielle Vis of St. Bonaventure as Co-Rookies of the Week, while Dayton's Nicole Waters and Fordham's Kate McDonnell were named Co-Players of the Week.

Mason returns to action this weekend at the Ohio State Tournament. The Patriots open play against Indiana on Friday, September 5 at 4 p.m.
