The No. 18 George Mason men's soccer team (5-0-1) had its first contest of the season sent to overtime Friday afternoon against Seton Hall (1-2-2), coming away with a 0-0 decision after 110 minutes of play.
"The effort on the day was terrific," said head coach Greg Andrulis. "Once we got acclimated to the turf we played some of our best soccer of the year . Seton Hall is a quality, well coached team and their goalkeeper made a couple of game saving saves, especially in the overtime.
"We had a positive mentality through out the match. we crested a boatload of quality chances but just couldn't find the back of the net today."
After being outshot 14-10 in regulation, the Patriots were able to deliver six shots in the two overtime periods compared to Seton Hall's two, to each end the contest with 16. Mason delivered two quick shots on goal in the first overtime period, with efforts from Colton Amidon and Henning Dirks being saved by Pirates goalkeeper Julian Spindler.
Mason sent two more shots in the first four minutes of the second overtime, the first a header from Timi Mulgrew the was saved and the second a blocked attempt from Jannik Eckenrode. A total of seven shots were put on goal in the match from the Patriots. Dirks led all players with five total shots.
Seton Hall opened the second half with a burst of four shots in a period of just over one minute, one of which went off the post in the 55th minute. Steffen Kraus made four saves in the match, one of them coming in the second overtime period to deliver the defense's fifth scoreless outing this season, one that Andrulis was happy with.
"Defensively we were once again very solid, a great collective team effort to get a clean sheet on the road."
The Patriots return to action on Sunday, September 21 in a noon matchup at LIU-Brooklyn.
