LYNCHBURG, Va. – Closing out this two-game road swing, the George Mason women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Big South defending champion Liberty Tuesday afternoon. Mason put four shots on goal, but could not overcome its deficit.
Mason wasted no time looking to get on the board early as Emmar Starr blasted a shot that was blocked by Liberty at just the 1:14 mark. Niomi Serrano forced goalkeeper Holly Van Noord into the first save of the contest in the 24th minute as the Patriot looked to score, but Van Noord came up with the stop. Liberty picked up momentum, rattling off three shots and converting the third attempt for a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute when Jennifer Knoebel scored her first of two goals in the afternoon completing a Baylee Gillmore assist.
Laura Glew came up with a save to keep the score at 1-0 when stopping a Knoebel attempt just over a minute into the second half. A solid opportunity came for Mason in the 54th minute when Liz Agiato took a corner kick for Mason and Kaila Williams' header off the kick was blocked by Liberty. The Lady Flames responded with their second goal five minutes later when Knoebel converted a free kick for the home squad. Williams and Hodges looked to cut Mason's deficit late in the second half when Williams' header shot in the 79th minute and Hodges's shot on goal were both stopped by Van Noord to keep the slate clean.
“This was a strong 2013 NCAA team with a difficult system to play against,” stated head coach Diane Drake. “We saw several solid opportunities in the first half, but couldn't hold our composure in the final pass. Liberty was able to capitalize on their chances.”
With the loss, Mason dropped to 2-6, while Liberty improved to 4-3.
Up next, the Patriots visit Atlantic 10 Conference foe George Washington in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, September 27 at 3:30 p.m. The match will count towards the Revolutionary Rivalry between the two schools.
