FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason outshot American 12-2 on goal Sunday afternoon, securing its first victory of the 2014 season, 2-1, just as strong weather began to move closer to Fairfax. Kaila Williams and Liz Agiato each scored their first goals of the season to give Mason the victory.

For the game, Mason outshot American 22-8, including a 12-2 shots on goal advantage. Sydney Mitchell, Kelly Pizzingrilli, Megan Benitez and Liz Hodges each led Mason with two shots on goal apiece. Briana Kottler picked up her first win of the season in goal, recording two saves.

Mason controlled majority of the possession during the game, limiting American to just four shots in the first half. Williams scored Mason's first goal of the season in the seventh minute of play, giving Mason a 1-0 lead early in the contest. Sydney Mitchell carried the ball down the near side and found Williams in the middle who finished the feed with one-touch past Sarah Dejak into the right back corner of the net for her first collegiate goal. Liz Agiato cushioned Mason's lead in the 37th minute with an unassisted tally as the senior stole possession from a pair of American players and went to goal, punching it past Dejak from 25 yards out for a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots attacked early in the second half, but couldn't convert as Mason put four shots on goal in the first eight minutes of play. Benitez looked to add a goal for the Patriots getting a head on the ball off an Agiato corner kick, but the header went wide. American cut its deficit to one goal with a Lindsay Muri tally in the 71st minute. Sara Perlman took the corner for the Eagles and after a scramble in the box, Muri scored off a Nicole Paviglionite touch for a 2-1 score.

Fouled inside the box in the 75th minute, Hodges was awarded a penalty kick, but Charlene Belanger came up with the save to keep the score at 2-1. Benitez looked to strike again just two minutes later, but Belanger was in position for the save before the game was delayed and eventually called due to weather in the area.

Mason hits the road for the first time this season traveling to take part in the Ohio State Tournament. The Patriots will take on Indiana to open the tournament on Friday, September 5. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. Mason will close out the tournament taking on host Ohio State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
