FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team saw solid opportunities but could not convert Friday night as East Carolina took a 2-0 decision at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots put five shots on goal and Briana Kottler made three stops in goal.
ECU looked to get on the scoreboard in the 19th minute as Lana Spitler forced Kottler into a save, but on the rebound, Kendall Frey's blast hit the top of the crossbar and bounced back into play. Mason saw a solid opportunity from Brenna Connell in the 31st minute as the Patriot's shot forced ECU goalkeeper Saundra Baron to move right to make the stop. East Carolina broke through first late in the first half as Courtney Taybron finished a Brett Thomas feed in the 43rd minute. Taybron's shot found the near back corner of the net to put the Pirates in front 1-0. Niomi Serrano tried to even the score with a shot on goal at the 43:50 mark, but Baron came up with the stop to head into intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Mason's Emma Starr looked for the equalizer less than 10 minutes into the second half, but couldn't convert as Sydney Mitchell blasted a shot in the 65th minute that Baron stopped on a diving save away from goal. The Pirates cushioned their lead with a Frey goal in the 83rd minute to take a 2-0 lead as Stephanie Seagrave feed Frey in the middle who punched in past Kottler into the left corner of the net. Just five minutes later Kelly Pizzingrilli scorched an attempt into a crouching Baron as the Pirates secured the 2-0 victory.
In the game, shots were even at 12 apiece as Baron came up with five saves, while Kottler recorded three. Mason attempted seven corner kicks to ECU's five. Mitchell, Pizzingrilli and Connell each led Mason with two shots apiece as five different players recorded shots on frame. With the loss, Mason dropped to 0-3 on the season, while ECU improved to 2-1.
Mason closes out this four-game homestand welcoming local foe American on Sunday. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
