George Mason University and American University will once again partner to host the D.C. Volleyball Challenge to open the 2014 women's volleyball season. As in years past, the 24th ranked Eagles and Patriots will be joined by Georgetown and Howard. Friday's matches will be played at American University before the tournament moves to Fairfax Saturday.
The Patriots will open play Friday evening at American University as part of the D.C. Volleyball Classic when they face Howard at 5:00 p.m.
The match will mark the 16th meeting between the programs with Mason holding a 14-1 series lead, with the lone loss coming in 2013 when the Bison sweeping the Patriots in close sets. Mason and Howard will face off in the first match of the tournament followed by American taking on Georgetown. All four teams will be opening their season.
First up for the Green and Gold on Saturday will be Georgetown following the conclusion of American vs Howard, which is set for 10 a.m. The meeting marks the 31st meeting between the Patriots and Hoyas with Mason trailing 13-17 in the series. George Mason will wrap up tournament play against American at approximately 7 p.m. in the 41st meeting between the Eagles and Patriots. Heading into the match up, Mason holds a 22-18 all-time series lead.
Mason returns eight letter winners from the 2013 campaign and welcomes six newcomers under head coach Pat Kendrick who enters her 30th season at the helm.
