The George Mason women's basketball team has announced the addition of four transfers Wednesday morning. Mikala McGhee, Tiffany Padgett, Katrina Hutzell and Kara Wright will be eligible to compete for head coach Nyla Milleson and the Patriots in the 2015-16 season.
“All four bring us experience, versatility, size and will fit nicely into what we are trying to accomplish,” Milleson said. “We are excited about them joining our team.”
Wright, a junior guard from Southeast Missouri State University, saw action in 58 games in two seasons with the Redhawks. The 5'11” Louisville, KY native averaged 7.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while at Southeast Missouri. Wright scored a career high 26 points in the Redhawks' 62-57 loss at Mizzou in 2013.
"Kara offers a post-up game at the guard position," Milleson said. "She is also a good rebounder with her quick leaping and body control."
McGhee, a junior guard from Missouri State, saw action in 51 games in two seasons with the Lady Bears including 20 games in her freshman season playing for current Mason head coach Nyla Milleson. The 5'11” Bridgeton, Mo. native averaged 3.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in just over 13 minutes per game.
“Mikala is a great athlete,” Milleson said. “She has great quickness, a strong body, defensive mind a great attitude. Offensively she can cut through the lane and a developing jump-shooter with range beyond the 3 point line.”
Padgett, a junior center from Loyola University Maryland, saw action in 59 games in two seasons with the Greyhounds. The 6'1” Laurel native averaged 5.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in her two seasons at Loyola, finishing the 2013-14 as the Greyhounds' second leading rebounder with 5.4 per game.
“Tiffany is an athletic post that is a perimeter threat with pro-frame,” Milleson said. “She has great range, very explosive and finishes strong in traffic.”
Hutzell, a 5'10" sophomore guard from UMBC, saw action in 19 games with the Retrievers. The Chantilly native was an All-Concorde District First Team honoree during her junior and senior high school seasons and was named to the district tournament all-tournament team selection as a senior.
"Katrina is athletic and has an amazing work ethic and feel for the game," Milleson said. "It's always nice to add local players to our roster."
The four tranfers have joined the four incoming freshman Casey Davis, Qierra Murray, Tayler Dodson and Cydni Cole as well as seven returners on campus for summer workouts. Stay tuned to GoMason.com for updates throughout the summer.
