FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team (17-11, 5-2) was held to seven hits as they were shutout by the University of Maryland (21-10, 6-8 ACC) 11-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
The Terrapin offense scored 11 runs on 16 hits, seven of them doubles to claim the victory. Jake Drossner improved to 4-0 after pitching five innings for Maryland, allowing three hits and striking out three batters. Michael Bowie falls to 0-3 after taking the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in three innings pitched.
Maryland was able to get on the board early scoring three runs in the first two innings. Doubles from Charlie White and Kyle Convissar brought in the first run in the opening frame and four consecutive hits in the second inning made it 3-0 after the first two.
The Terrapins stretched out their lead in the fourth inning when they plated five runs on five hits, four of them singles. Bowie was replaced by Riley Coverdale before an out was recorded, who pitched the fourth and fifth innings and allowed three runs on three hits.
Josh Leemhuis and Jordan Hill each went 2-4 in the game while Patrick Esposito, Blaise Fernandez and Andrew Sable also collected singles. Five members of the Mason pitching staff were used, including Bowie and Coverdale. Rich McMahon made his first appearance since March 14 to pitch one and two-thirds innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out three batters and walking one. Neight Hoffa fanned two batters in one and one-third scoreless innings before Tyler Kardas came in to finish off the game in the ninth.
The Patriots are back in action on Wednesday, April 9 when they host the visiting Georgetown Hoyas (12-16, 0-3 BIG EAST). First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with Jake Kalish making his second start of the season for Mason.
