Track and Field Opens Raleigh Relays Strong on Day One

Marshall, Wallerstedt Shine in Track and Field Spring Invite

George Mason finished eighth overall in the men's and sixth in the women's at the annual Mason Spring Invitational Saturday in Fairfax.

Seniors led the way at their final collegiate home meet with Mandissa Marshall taking first in pole vault with a height of 4.20. Marshall was the only female competitor to break the four meter mark on the day, however fellow Patriot, Megann Kaiser, took eighth with a mark of 3.55m.

The Patriots also took two top 10 finishes in the women's hammer throw with senior Meredith Oare finished seventh with a mark of 44.61m and Hales Hale taking ninth with a personal record mark of 42.89m. Amanda Denger finished eighth in the javelin with a mark of 36.59. Sophomore Michelle Wallerstedt rounded out the women's field performance with a top finish in the discus, with a mark of 47.61m.

Mason had two men finish in the top 10 in pole vault with Wes Sun taking fifth with a height of 4.65m and Logan Besougloff finishing tied for 7th with a mark of 4.50m to set a new personal record. Byron Sintim finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 7.06m and Jason Wellington took sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.55m.

Seniors also led the way on the track with George Empty finishing third in the men's 400m dash with a time of 47.55, qualifying for the IC4A/ECACs. Fellow senior Adrian Vaughn qualified last weekend, but improved on his mark with a time of 47.73 to finish fifth. Freshman Zamier Johnson set a personal record with a time of 47.99 to finish eighth.

Junior Anthony Williams set a personal record as well, taking third place in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 14.06 and Freshman Bernard Freeman finished eighth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.66.

Junior Shavon Briscoe qualified for the ECACs as well, finishing fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.99. Freshman Caela Williams continued her strong rookie season with a seventh place finish in the 400m dash in a personal record time of 56.10, while senior Taylor Wheaton came in eighth, and qualified for the ECACs  in her first collegiate appearance in the 200m dash with a time of 24.62.
