BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Mason trailed by three with just over a minute to play, but could not complete the comeback against Fordham, falling in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, 70-67. Mason's three seniors all finished in double-figures, combining for 44 points.
Bryon Allen led the way with 22 points, followed by Johnny Williams with 14 points. Sherrod Wright capped his collegiate playing career with eight points. Williams recorded his second career double-double with 10 rebounds as Erik Copes fell just short with 11 rebounds and nine points.
For the game, Mason shot 39.1 percent from the field, while limiting Fordham to a 35.4 percent effort. The Rams finished the game 21-of-32 from the free throw line to Mason's 11-of-17 effort and won the rebounding battle, 50-42. Fordham converted 24 offensive turnovers into 27 second chance points.
Mason cut it to one point, 48-47, using a three-pointer from Wright with 9:01 to play and would cut it to three as Allen hit a trey with 1:07 to play for a 62-59 ballgame. Fordham would extend its lead back to four at the free throw line as Allen cut it back to one, 67-66, with his second trey of the half with 15.4 seconds on the clock. Bryan Smith hit two free throws before Johnny Williams hit the front end of a pair for a 69-67 score at 5.4 seconds. Ryan Canty accounted for the final score with a free throw for the final 70-67 score.
Mason closed the season 11-20 overall and 4-12 in its inaugural season in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
