News and Notes
The George Mason women's basketball team will honor its four seniors, Janaa Pickard, Kyana Jacobs, Cierra Strickland and Christine Weithman as the Patriots wrap up regular season play against Richmond Saturday afternoon. The tilt is a rematch of the overtime thriller from earlier this season in Richmond.
On Jan. 15, junior Sandra Ngoie lit up Richmond for 29 points in her first career start at Mason hitting six treys and snagging nine rebounds, but it was not enough to overcome the Spiders at home. The familiar foes were tied with as little as two minutes remaining in overtime, but the Spiders would take a three point lead with 13 seconds remaining and Ngoie would fail to connect on two attempts from beyond the arc.
Prior to the January battle, the Patriots and Spiders hadn't seen each other since 2009 and have not played in Fairfax since November 2008. The Patriots' last victory over Richmond dates back to February of 1999. The oldest of Mason's four seniors being honored, Pickard, was just eight years old.
Mason is coming off back-to-back road losses with a narrow 57-54 decision at St. Bonaventure last Saturday and a 71-52 loss at Fordham on Wednesday. Sophomore Taylor Brown was the lone Patriot in double figures with 16 points, 12 coming in the second half. A slow start doomed the Patriots Wednesday as they would shoot under 30% in the first half, however they bounced back in the final 20 minutes of play connecting on over 57% from the field.
The Spiders are coming off a 73-60 win over VCU on Wednesday where five scored in double-digits. On the season, Richmond is led by Olivia Healy with 12.3 points per game and Genevieve Okoro with 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Next up, Mason will head to Richmond for the Atlantic 10 tournament starting March 5. Stay tuned to GoMason.com for complete details about seeding and scheduling leading up to the tournament.
