AMHERST, Mass. – Erik Copes notched his fourth career double-double and Sherrod Wright drained 22 points as George Mason men's basketball tarnished Massachusetts' unblemished home record with a 91-80 victory Wednesday night in the Mullins Center.
Mason avenged an earlier one-point loss in Fairfax this season with its second straight Atlantic 10 Conference win in league play. The Patriots never trailed following the 17:41 mark in the first half and led by as many as 17 points in the game. Mason's 91 points marked the largest offensive output by an opponent in the Mullins Center this season.
Five Patriots scored in double-figures as Copes finished the game with 15 rebounds, tying his career-high, and 12 points. Wright finished with a game-high 22 points, followed by Bryon Allen with 19, Patrick Holloway with 13 and Marquise Moore with 12. Mason shot 47.0 percent from the field, while holding UMass to a 39.7 percent effort. Moore went 10-for-12 from the free throw line (career-high) and dished out five assists in the game.
Mason outscored UMass in the paint 42-34 and converted 11 Minutemen turnovers into 18 points. The Patriots finished the game going 22-for-29 from the charity stripe. UMass narrowly won the rebounding battle, 41-40, led by Cady Lalanne's 10 rebounds and 11 points. Trey Davis paced the Minutemen offense with 20 points on the night.
Wright handed Mason its final lead of the contest draining a trey at the 16:59 mark in the first half for an 8-5 Patriot advantage. UMass would cut it to one point midway through the first half, but the Patriot defense would allow the Minutemen to come no closer.
The Patriots return to Fairfax for Homecoming this Saturday, Feb. 15 to host St. Bonaventure at 6 p.m. The Mason women's basketball team welcomes Saint Joseph's earlier in the day at 1 p.m.
