Freshman Brittany Jackson put up career numbers in just her second start in Saturday's 103-81 loss at Dayton. Jackson registered 12 points and five rebounds in the loss, both career highs.
“Brittany is really giving us a level of calmness and really kind of a level of confidence,” head coach Nyla Milleson said. “She's doing a lot of really good things and I think she is really supporting Taylor [Brown] in such a way on both ends of the floor.”
Less than two minutes into the game coach Milleson called timeout with her team trailing 10-2. From there, the Patriots would go on a 20-9 run, capped off by a three from Janaa Pickard, to take a 22-19 lead with 11:08 remaining in the half.
“We continue to give maximum effort,” Milleson said. “We have a couple of really good individual performances, just continue to work and continue to get better.”
Though Mason would shoot 40% from the field in the first half, it was not enough to keep up with the Flyers who would make 60% of their shots and go 6-10 from behind the arc. Heading into intermission, the Patriots trailed 56-42.
Taylor Brown would set a spark for the Patriots in the second half banking 10 points in under four minutes. Defensively, Mason held the Flyers to more modest numbers after the break as well, keeping the Flyers to 41% from the field and just over 22% from beyond the arc.
As a team, Mason hit just 42.6% from the field, the highest mark for the Patriots in conference play, thanks in large part to Brown. The redshirt sophomore led all scorers with 30 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
“We've changed some roles in our defensive transition. I think that's helping Taylor in some other areas including rebounding.
Milleson was also impressed by the overall performance of junior, Sandra Ngoie, who added 21 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.
“Tonight was probably Sandra's best all-around game, on both ends of the floor.”
The Patriots continue their road stretch when they head to LaSalle Wednesday at 7:00 P.M.
