Redshirt junior Taylor Brown had a game-high 26 points as George Mason women's basketball fell 84-71 to East Tennessee State Wednesday night in Fairfax.
ETSU (4-4) got 22 points off 19 Mason (4-4) turnovers, including 15 points off eight turnovers in the second half. The Patriots shot just 38.3 (23-60) percent from the field compared the Bucs 43.9 (26-34) percent with both sides shooting well below their season averages from beyond the arc. Mason averaged just over 30 percent from three going into the night, shot just 13.3 (2-15) percent while ETSU failed to make any of their 11 attempts.
Redshirt junior Kristi Mokube registered 14 points and one blocked shot in 20 minutes of play while classmate Jasmine Jackson contributed a game-high nine rebounds to the effort. Freshman Casey Davis set a career-high with seven points.
After back-to-back layups from Brown gave the Patriots their only lead of the first half, a 4-2 advantage with 17:28 left in the first half. The Buccaneers were quick to respond with Shamauria Bridge converting an old fashion three-point play to give ETSU back the lead. The Bucs would hold the advantage for much of the first half, with a layup from Serena Clark capping off a 14 minute stretch where ETSU outscored the Patriots 32-17 to give the visitors a 33-21 lead. Brown responded with her first points in nearly six minutes of play sparking a three minute 17-5 Mason run that would tie the contest at 38-38 heading into the half.
The Patriots would regain the lead early in the first half on a jumper from Brown, but back-to-back jumpers from Christopher Chandler and Clark would give ETSU back the lead for good.
Next up, Mason heads to St. Francis on Saturday to take on the Red Flash at 6 p.m.
