PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The George Mason men's soccer team capped off the regular season with a 1-1 tie against La Salle in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The draw gives Mason a record of 11-3-4 and a conference record of 4-2-2. The Patriots end the season tied with Davidson in the Atlantic 10 however defeated the Wildcats in the regular season. La Salle ends the season 7-8-3, 3-3-2 in the A-10.
The Explorers struck first and early in the match, taking the 1-0 lead on Greg Henry's first goal of the season in the 11th minute. After a feed from the near corner Henry's shots deflected off keeper Michael Butts and into the net. La Salle only recorded two shots in the first half to Mason's eight.
The equalizer would come 20 minutes later in the 31st minute on Matt Tucker's second goal of the season. The sophomore was involved in a foot race down the sideline and was able to poke it past keeper Mike Kirk for the tying goal after he came out of the net. Kirk made five saves in the contest while Butts made one.
The Patriots ended regulation with a shot advantage of 15-6 despite the 1-1 score. Each side recorded a shot in the first overtime period while La Salle had three in the second overtime, two of which were blocked.
The Patriots draw #5 seeded Davidson in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday, November 13 in Richmond, Va.. Mason defeated the Wildcats 2-1 in overtime on October 25. The full Atlantic 10 Tournament bracket will be released Sunday evening.
