Sandra Ngoie notched her second double-double of the season and freshman Qierra Murray had a career high 10 points Friday afternoon as George Mason women's basketball fell 88-86 on day one of the Plaza Light Classic at UMKC in Kansas City.
The Patriots could not stop Abilene Christian's offense for much for the first half, as Alexis Mason would register 20 points, shooting 50 percent (4-8) from beyond the arc. Mason shot just 32 percent (15-46) from the field in the first half and trailed 43-33 at the break.
The Patriots heated up the second half. Down by 15 with 14:29 remaining, Mason set took off on a 42- run to tie the game at 86-86 with less than 30 seconds remaining off two free throws from redshirt juniors Taylor Brown. ACU responded with a layup to retake the lead with 6 seconds to play. Brown looked to send the game to overtime, but West came through with a block to end the game.
Eleven different Patriots registered minutes Friday, with all 11 scoring at least two points. Ngoie led the way with the lone double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Brown and classmates Jasmine Jackson had 18 each and classmate Kristi Mokube added 11.
Mason returns to the court Saturday for day two of the UMKC Plaza Lights Classic when they face Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m.
