George Mason women's basketball (1-1) returns to the court Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they host Delaware State (0-2) in the Patriot Center. Wednesday night marks the 17th meeting between the programs with Mason holding a 14-3 series lead. However, the Hornets took last year's meeting 90-83 in overtime trailing by as much as 11 with just under six minutes to go in the second half.
Both teams had four players hit double-digits, and both team-leaders return this season. The Hornets Tierra Hawkins led all scorers with 29 points in last year's meeting while Taylor Brown led the Patriots with 20 points and eight assists. Both Brown and Hawkins currently lead their teams in scoring.
The Patriots are coming off a 1-1 opening weekend including a historic win over Virginia Tech Friday followed by a 79-70 loss to Morehead State Sunday afternoon. Through two games, Brown leads Mason in both scoring with 29 points per game and rebounds with 9.5 rebounds per game. The redshirt junior's 35 points and 11 rebounds helped her earn this season's first Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball's Player of the Week honors.
The Hornets started their season at the Akron Classic where they dropped both games with a 76-55 decision against Northern Kentucky Friday followed by a 90-84 loss to Binghamton Saturday.
Mason will wrap up their opening home stand Sunday when they host the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. before heading to Navy on Tuesday.
